Babylonian Winter

Triss Gray's picture

Hi all,

with the big winter festivities a-coming, and SL even having a winter festival, Babylonia can't stay behind!

We want to organize some winter activities, christmas, snow, new year's eve etc are the keywords here! So, if you have any idea's, can offer any help, want to let us know what you think of the ideas already brought forward, let us knowby reacting to this message...

some ideas:

  • christmas market
  • christmas treasure hunt
  • iglo building contest
  • ice skating

oh,and before I forget: merry christmas, a Happy New Year, and a shiny easter! ;)

Christmas in Babylon? That

Christmas in Babylon? That doesn't seem very historically accurate!

What exactly would be the contest in igloo building? Lowest number of prims?

A little snowball fight could be fun too, but how do we keep score?

well, it's not about

well, it's not about historical accuracy, but about having a little fun (TM) :P Besides, it's not christmas specific, but general winter-holiday-ish... though they probably weren't too "big" on winters as well :)

It'll probably take place at my home, since our parcel at orache is too full...

snowballfight is an idea as well, we do have snowballthrowers... But keeping score might take some advanced scripting work, and I'(m not sure i'll have the time and/or skills... There is an opensource weapon system in SL I believe, so maybe that can be modded.....

About the contest: don't know, maybe best looking with a max nr of prims to use in a limited time? We'll have to create a jury then  ;)

If anybody has a good idea to combine all this with a "social" activity (I mean a good cause, like a charity or anything), that could be nice as well....

I have found a snowboard...

I have found a snowboard... and lots of other stuff to give away for the winter market.

We might need to test a few things before giving them away... Laughing out loud

I think it's great to have an activity coming, will be fun to work on it together!

 Love,

Mary

Organising a winter event

Organising a winter event would be great ! Smiling

Few days ago I came across free copyable iceskates with a good iceskating animation, (not arms flapping but propper skatestrokes with arms and legs, when you start to walk it shows you iceskating) and is quite funny.
problem is almost every island seems to have an iceskate-ring by now.

Another idea could be to make a simple snowramp, and have a sled/sleigh-like vehicle (can probably alter an existing vehicle a little) and then instead of making jumps and bumps on the ramp, it could be easier to just stick objects on the ramp so you'd have a slalom and obstacle course. I'll try to find or make such a vehicle.

Yesterday I had a go at a propper snowballfight with the snowballshooter with a real life friend, (who hardly needs encouragement after saying snowballshooter) was good fun, they've got beyond visual range capability and you can fire several "rounds" a second. As fast as you can press the mousebutton and till your mousefinger starts to hurt. I must admit it did stop feeling like a snowballfight, and more of a Quake-4 type of thing with snowballs whistling past my ears and snowballs falling out of the sky all around me making loud thumps as they land, hiding behind trees and objects, watching the green blip on the map trying to locate my target. It was terrifying. I had good hope that I won, but my adversary told me that hope wasn't enough.
next time I'll challenge you people. You'll need to practise and work on your draw, get to know your snowballs, learn how they deflect under gravity and off of objects so to best use them to your advantage, to keep the initiative, when the situation becomes critical.

well done! could you send a

well done! could you send a copy of these skates my way? we'll see if we have some space for a ring, but let's not make it top-priority since it isn't very original.... As for the sleighing idea: if you can hack up a sleigh or sth alike, I think I could make a system to give points to people depending on how many obstacles they hit or didn't hit, + keep time.....

as for the snowsystem: we could just fiore away, but something tells me we might need a referee or some official scoring system, to have something of a competition without too much  arguiing etc....

we also need to pick a date, or dates, to hold our events..... having a date to work toward helps in getting things forward I think... the official linden winter fests are from 14th of december till the 8th  of januari... If we could do it in januari, I could help out more, since I have 2 weeks of holiday starting the 31st of december...
