EBay: The Place for Microfinance

On the online auction giant's new MicroPlace site, investors can lend as little as $50 to would-be small business owners around the globe.

Tracey Pettengill Turner doesn't want to give handouts to poor people. But she does want to make investments in them. So on Oct. 24, Turner is launching MicroPlace.com, a Web site that lets small investors provide low-interest "micro" loans, of $50 or more, to would-be small business owners. Her hope is to create sustainable economic growth in the world's most impoverished communities-and do her part to expand the reach of the microfinance industry to more than 1 billion people worldwide, from about 100 million people currently.

Turner's outsized ambitions are backed by an equally formidable player. Internet commerce giant eBay acquired the company in June, 2006, for a small, undisclosed, sum when it was little more than Turner and her business plan. MicroPlace benefits from the lessons eBay has learned working with the millions of small business owners and consumers who buy and sell on its family of sites. Paypal, eBay's online payment service, will process the loans free of charge. "There are a billion people in the world who are self-employed, hard-working, and poor, and we are hoping to scale the industry to at least a billion," Turner says.

Opinion/Reason for posting:

I heard lots of good things about microfinancing in the past, and if this means a convenient way to contribrute, so more people will contribute, it sounds good... The only thing that makes me wonder is what ebay get's out of this... Since they won't be charging for contributions (or so they promise), what's their gain? Publicity? Or am I to believe such a corporate moloch as Ebay (ebay, skype, paypal) has a genuine interest for "making the world a better place"?

I think i'm going to read up a bit on this, if it proves legit, maybe we could do an event to raise some money? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on both the article and/ or the event!

Apparently the microplace

Apparently the microplace site can only be used by US residents, which I am not  :). So probably forget about the event-thing...
Some answers out of the microplace faq to my questions about the benefit for ebay:

Why is MicroPlace an eBay company?
When eBay executives heard about MicroPlace, they were excited by the synergies between eBay's mission to provide economic opportunity and MicroPlace's vision to empower the world's working poor. They saw MicroPlace as an ideal opportunity to put eBay's assets to work in a way that could be truly world-changing. Powered by eBay's expertise in connecting people, creating marketplaces and processing online transactions, MicroPlace could deliver on its vision to significantly impact global poverty.

Does eBay make money from MicroPlace?
MicroPlace must charge fees to be a sustainable organization.
MicroPlace currently charges a fee to the organizations that offer investments through the MicroPlace website. This fee covers MicroPlace's costs to support the website, provide customer service and be compliant with security regulations. MicroPlace does not charge any fees to the investor. Any profits generated by MicroPlace will be used to fund eBay's socially beneficial activities like the eBay Foundation.
