Yesterday, we came up with some questions that need to be answered before we can develop a "plan" to build the new island. This thread is to share your answers to these questions, and maybe pose new questions. I will add relevant questions to this top thread and give them a number, so they can be referenced easier for other users.

what we already have:

  1. <QUESTION ANSWERED>
will we add a river to the island? Babylon itself was dependent on the river, adn a river has some potential, like maybe explaining about irrigation etc. If a river is to be constructed, how many :). I had the idea of building both tigris and eufrates on our island, but on a smaller scale. The shape of our island would be perfect to immitate a structure like here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:LittleIraq.png
  2. what kind of government/decision instrument do you want? It's impossible to decide every small thing with all people, so some form of government would be needed. WHat structure do you want? an assembly, a king, parliament...
  3. would you (babylonians only, not just every sl-er out there ;)) like to own a babylonian themed house on the island?

I am also in favour of the idea of river. Both proposals, one river or two rivers are meaningfull.

Babylonia was born between Tigris and Euphrates. Babylon was crossed by Euphrates. The true irrigation system needs two rivers because water came from Tigris, was used in different cities, and then, wastes went to Euphrates.

If we want to represent Babylon, only Euphrates means. My vote is for this option, one wide river, because, if we build two rivers, we could lose too much terrain.

I have no vote right now about the other two questions. Any answer works for me.

As far as this city should be alive, babylonians who daily help babylon grows, or almost daily, and wants a house, i think they have a right for a house.

Even, i think that some business could make sense in the island (both related to real life or to second life). But it would depend on the business, i think

hehe, i suppose we'd need someone to carefully watch the kind of activities Smiling

I also attached to this the picture i took from high above the island, it can be used to draw some "layouts" for the island...

hi Smiling

i have terraform the island a bit. Now, there is two rivers. Tigris, lefs side (it s the sea), and Euphrates crossing the region.

Please, tell if you like, if not, i will revert the island to the start, no problem.

ok, this is a map-picture of how the island looks now, we'll need some general layout as to where the buildings will be etc...

1 - Rivers may take a lot of space, but they are nice. Maybe if there will indeed be a lack of space, it can be solved by building a tower? (sorry, couldn't resist Eye-wink )

2 - My experience with online communities is that it's best to have a benevolent dictator for life (or "owner") who is assisted by 2 - 4 users who are both very active and well respected by the rest of the community. "very active" is easy to determine, "well respected" may mean you need some (informal) elections when an assistant quits. When you're just starting a community, it's unlikely anyone will disagree with the benevolent dictator who the assistants will be. In other words: relax, it will all sort itself out. Trying to build a real democracy will just lead to flamewars, while having too few or inactive assistants for the community owner means it will not reach something I would call "criticall mass of integrity". Well, that's my experience as a moderator of libervis.com, SL could be different because it is a somewhat different kind of communication.

3 - If I would be able to do something interesting with it, yes! Currently the linux version of SL doesn't work for me so at the moment it's not practical for me to be around a lot.

I hope this was useful,

- N

hi natlia,
thanks for your input and welcome on the babylonia website!! I guess i'm the benevolent dictator as far as this site is concerned ;) at least I hope it's benevolent :P.

about 1: it's kinda decide"d in the meantime (but will have to check back, been away for a week) that we will have the rivers, so maybe Ishould remove the question from the start post. Your answer for 2 sounds interesting to say the least. about 3, i'm onl inux too, and as far as I know i don't have a lot of trouble with the client on linux, so maybe i can help you (or maybe not, you never know with sl Eye-wink)... Always willing to help Smiling
